Emergency First Aid at Work
As of 1st October 2009, the Health & Safety Executive (HSE) changed the one day course to the Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) course. This course is now governed by the HSE and only HSE accredited training providers may facilitate this course.
This course is ideal for small or low risk businesses, shops, transport workers, voluntary and church groups and the Self Employed. Candidates may also be sent as additional support for qualified First Aid at Work (FAW) personnel. All course content is in accordance with the Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations.
The EFAW is a one day course with a minimum instructor contact time of 6 hours. It includes theory, instructor demonstrations and practical application, in a relaxed atmosphere, designed to hone candidate’s skills and build confidence.

- Priorities of First Aid
- Safe Management of the Incident
- Recognition & Management of : -
- Cardiac Arrest & Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation
- An Unconscious Casualty
- Choking
- Seizures
- Blood Loss & Shock
- Wounds & Fractures
- Burns and Scalds
- How to record and report Incidents
- Contents of a First Aid Kit
Competency will be based on continuous visual assessment of students, there is no final exam. Students must complete the course and if deemed to have reached the required standard, they are issued with a certificate that is valid for three years and will receive a personal resuscitation shield (for use in the event of an emergency, after the course).
