First Aid at Work

Course content is in accordance with the Health and Safety Executive (First Aid Regulations) 1981 and only HSE accredited training providers may facilitate this course. Due to the change in legislation, the FAW has a minimum instructor contact time of 18 hours. This is normally completed over 3 days, however can be split over a few weeks if needed.

The FAW is a more in depth course than the 1 day EFAW. The FAW course includes theory, group work, instructor demonstrations, pictures or video and practical application, in a relaxed atmosphere. Our course is designed to inform, give greater understanding aswell as to hone a candidate's practical skills and build their confidence.

Course content includes:

  • Priorities of First Aid
  • Safe Management of the Incident
  • Infection Control
  • Resuscitation of adults
  • Choking
  • Management of an unconscious casualty
  • Wounds & Bleeding
  • Shock
  • Eye Injuries
  • Shock
  • Burns & scalds
  • Seizures management
  • Care of the diabetic
  • Deeper theory and understanding of respiratory and circulatory conditions such as:
    • Asthma
    • Angina
    • Heart Attack
    • Anaphylactic Shock
    • Extremes of body temperature
  • Various minor injuries and illness
  • Record Keeping

Competency will be based on continuous visual assessment the instructor and 2 short assessments on day 3. Candidates, who complete the course and pass the assessments, will be issued with a HSE approved certificate; valid for three years. (Candidates will receive a personal resuscitation shield for use in the event of an emergency, after the course).
